Oldest operating passenger shipping company uses newest ferry terminal in Liverpool Waters

The Isle of Man Steam Packet company began operations in 1830 and is currently familiarising its ferry captains with berthing at its new, £70 million ferry terminal in the Liverpool Waters development.

In nearby West Waterloo Place, Romal Capital’s luxury developments are a welcoming gateway for ferry arrivals. They complement the Isle of Man’s vital transport hub with public spaces, amenities and residential units that reflect Liverpool’s maritime heritage and its bustling, dynamic future. Romal promoted accessibility to the southern docks by funding the building of a link bridge from the Isle of Man Ferry Terminal to Princes Dock, which leads to the Pier Head and the Albert Dock.

Steam Packet Ferry Terminal in Liverpool Waters

We will keep you posted on the opening date of the new ferry terminal and look forward to our residents packing their suitcases and heading off for a welcome break to the middle of the Irish Sea, where the Isle of Man is equidistant from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland – all visible from the top of Snaefell Mountain. It only became an island 8,000 years ago and we know it was settled 1,500 years later – its relationship with Liverpool, a key gateway to the British mainland for trade and tourism, is longstanding, but not quite so ancient.

Leisure visitors are attracted to the Isle of Man by its miles of footpaths through gorgeous scenery (UNESCO declared it a Biosphere Reserve), by its history (including 250 registered sites) and by its iconic links with motorcycle racing (the TT in May/early June and the Grand Prix in late August/early September).

Business visitors are attracted by its unique financial status and – where once agriculture, fishing and tourism were the main industries – financial services, gambling and films are making islanders wealthy and attracting tax exiles! It is also becoming a hub for space commerce and has licensed cannabis growing.

If transport is your thing, then having enjoyed a speedy ferry ride you could slow down with a ride along Douglas Promenade on the oldest horse-drawn tram still in service. Or work your way through excursions on both electric and steam railways – up mountains, down glens, to mines.

The Isle of Man is not actually part of the UK, although the mainland does manage its defence and external affairs. Curiously, and because of its unique legislative role, the Isle of Man was both first to give (unmarried) women the vote (in 1881) and last to legalise same-sex activity (in 1992).

So, whether you are attracted by the top income tax rate of 20% or by the chance to sight six horns on a Manx Loaghtan sheep, then listen out for a cheery ‘moghrey mie’ (good morning in Manx) when you get there via the brand-new ferry terminal – and ‘gura mie eu’ (thank you) for reading.
